LEADERSHIP

I have held positions in all levels of leadership – Principal, Chief, Chair, Director and Project Manager. I have managed large and small teams for planning, creation and implementation of more than 60 projects. I have experienced successes and challenges and learned from both.

This dynamic symposium engaged 100 attendees with presentations, conversations and workshops focusing on collaborative approaches to integrative design thinking in the creation of meaningful social experiences and interactions within exhibitions. Keynote speakers were Mark O’Neill, FMA PhD Director of Policy and Research, Glasgow Life Open Museum, and Elaine Heumann Gurian Senior Consultant, The Museum Group. 25th Anniversary Celebration + Symposium for the Museum Exhibition Planning & Design Program (March 2016)

In 2016, I led the organization and implementation of a two-day 25th anniversary event of the Museum Exhibition Planning + Design Program at the University of the Arts. For over a quarter of century the MEPD MFA Program has produced change agents in the Museum field and has been responsive to, as well as a catalyst for, the seismic shifts that have occurred in the Museum Field worldwide. Keynote Speaker Marsha Semmel launched the event by contextualizing the quarter century, 1990 to 2015. The symposium included workshops to engage attendees in discussions and presentations from external influences of the information age to the new mission driven initiatives of community engagement, cultural agency, and social justice. The event also made special recognition for MEPD founders Jane and Ed Bedno, with a special award from the University.

Spark–Fuel–Ignite! Program

2014 - 2018

Polly McKenna-Cress founded Spark–Fuel–Ignite! (SFI!) as a multi-year program initiative to create a more diverse pipeline into the design fields with a focus on community engagement. The strategic goal of SFI! was to further Philadelphia’s citywide mission of building the Creative Economy by facilitating younger generations towards creative professional and civic-minded practices. The intergenerational program brought together multiple institutional partners, involving University of the Arts graduate students, students from four local high schools and other community partners. SFI! was built into the curriculum, and allowed high school students to work with graduate mentors as active co-creators of a community project.

Working through a Design Thinking process the final deliverables were pop-up exhibits installed throughout Philadelphia in local libraries, galleries, and at the Philadelphia Science Festival. SFI! was a model for other university/museum partnerships interested in building an entrepreneurial “pipeline" from neighborhoods to industry through pathways of education, professional practice and community engagement.
